Due to our large and nervous German Shepherd my partner and I cannot travel, we haven't been away since he came home (almost 5 years ago). Having given up on the idea of traditional hotel holidays we decided to try renting a van as an experiment, first through Camplify (received no responses, over multiple months) and then finally though Goboony - we messaged Kelly about Big Yellow and received a response within 20 minutes, the booking was confirmed within a day.
Kelly was incredibly helpful from the start, she took us through the process of providing all the documents needed for the insurance, sent over a comprehensive instruction manual for the van so we could familiarise ourselves and arranged casual easy timings for us to pick up and drop off. Check in (picking the van up) took around 30 minutes to go through the GoBoony form and Kelly was very easy to find.
The van itself is perfectly set out, there is ALOT of storage space, every seat has storage below, there are 2 head height cabinets and some drawers (one with large water storage), I over planned and overpacked - despite this there was still so much space leftover. You have lots of headroom throughout, the benches are incredibly comfortable and the table is the perfect size for food or games, but it can be easily taken down (less than 30 seconds) if you want it out the way or to put the bed up (less than 5 mins). Unlike thinner vans the transverse bed is long enough for a taller than average man to sleep with his legs stretched out and incredibly comfortable, Kelly provided a memory foam topper but the bench cushions were comfortable enough that we didn't end up needing it. Our dog stayed on his large dog bed beside us and slept without problem throughout the night. Everything in the van seems to be made so that it doesn't take up dirt or catch hairs which is very helpful with a long haired German Shepherd and made it very easy to clean down at the end of the trip.
My partner had driven vans before but never something this wide, he adapted quickly to it and didn't have a single problem despite taking some thin country back roads, the cab is humongous and very comfortable to be a passenger in, our dog stayed in the back on his bed, he could see us in the front and it was a smooth ride back there for him, every time we opened the doors he was excited for a new beach and adventure.
Electrics worked great, the fridge consistently worked throughout, the kettle provided by Kelly was very much appreciated, the lighting was lovely (there were lots of options) and we were able to charge all our devices multiple times. One of the campsites had electric hook up which was very easy to do and we only used 10p worth overnight.
It was, without a doubt, the best holiday I have ever been on!
This was an experiment to see whether this mode of travel would suit us and it went better than I could have imagined. To have a safe, comfortable place to come back to; to sit in, eat in, sleep in and travel in, gave us such a sense of freedom and confidence that I don't think you can get with any other travel/accommodation. We made the conscious decision to park in the best spots with the rear toward the best views so we could spend time together immersed in beautiful surroundings while being utterly comfortable and safe inside Big Yellow. It was just serene throughout.
We did think that if this went well then we might buy a van ourselves. But with Big Yellow being so close and so perfect we'll likely just keep booking with Kelly!
